Plumbers in Green Bay, WI, Discuss Dripping Faucets, Their Dangers, and Causes

Green Bay, United States - February 27, 2023 / Vern Kummers Plumbing, Inc. /

Leaky Faucets Are More Than Just a Distraction

A dripping faucet can be a nuisance regardless of where it’s located. It is a steady reminder of persistent plumbing issues and costs homeowners a lot of money in wasted water. Rather than wait for additional problems to arise, fixing the issue right away will help maintain a functional home.

Dangers of Leaking Faucets

faucetLeaky faucets can cause various problems if they aren’t taken care of soon. The most obvious is wasting water. The wasted water will also be reflected in a higher water bill. Even just one dripping faucet that drips at a rate of one drop of water per second can waste over 3,000 gallons of water a year.

Leaking faucets can also cause mold and mildew growth because they thrive in moist environments, and leaks don’t allow the area to dry thoroughly. Mold can cause health issues and symptoms of illnesses in household residents, so leaks should never be ignored. Skin irritation and allergy symptoms are some of the most common side effects. For those with existing breathing issues such as asthma, mold can worsen the condition.

What Causes a Faucet to Leak?

There are multiple reasons why a faucet may be leaking. A damaged cartridge or broken washer can cause a faucet leak. These are both located inside the tap and can be replaced or fixed. Depending on the type of faucet, specific cartridges may need to be ordered because they are not one size fits all. If the cartridge is damaged, the amount of water from the tap can be affected, including causing a faucet to leak.

This is similar to washers. A washer is built to rest against the valve seat so it can easily slide when necessary. A broken washer causes friction and will cause a faucet to drip. This can be due to age, corrosion, or improper installation.

An O-ring can also be found inside the faucet. It looks like a tiny lifesaver with the middle cut out. It is located near the faucet's handle and is usually securely attached to a screw. If an O-ring becomes loose, worn out, or broken, this will cause the seal not to be watertight anymore, leading to a leak.

How to Fix a Leaky Faucet

faucetMost homeowners prefer to call a plumber to fix or replace leaking faucets because it is a much faster, safer, and the most effective route. Plumbing systems are complex, and if they malfunction or someone messes up repairs, it can cause health problems, additional leaks, and even backflow. Licensed plumbers are trained and have the skills and equipment necessary to repair or replace faucets right the first time.

Sometimes leaky faucet repair can be done without additional help. The first step is to turn off the water. This will prevent the bathroom or kitchen from flooding after removing the tap or handle. After shutting off the valves, the faucet handles need to be disassembled. This can be done with a regular screwdriver depending on the type of faucet. Caps and handle screws should be saved for later.

The inner faucet cartridge can be removed with a screwdriver. Some cartridges are designed to pop off, in which case force may be necessary. The replacement process will be different for every faucet. A trained technician or plumbing contractor can identify which replacement valves, O-rings, or cartridges are required.
